Do you know the reason for celebrating Valentine’s day?
Saint Valentine was a priest who lived in ancient Rome in the 3rd century. We can find many stories about Saint Valentine, and many people believe in different ones.
During the reign of Claudius II in ancient Rome, there were many activities against the will of the people. Maintaining a strong army was also Claudius II’s idea at the time. Similarly, Christianity was a new
religion, and it was growing. But it was not favored by high-level personalities at that time.
So the people who supported and followed Christianity were targeted. Emperor Claudius II introduced strict laws for Christians.
Claudius II believed that if military personnel followed Christianity and got married, they would not be devoted to the army. So, he introduced a law that prohibited soldiers from marrying.
He thought that if soldiers got married, they would be emotionally attached to their partners rather than contributing to the army.
In parallel, Saint Valentine started to arrange marriage functions for the soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies. This started to give people a sense of the importance of love. But after Claudius II learned about the activities of Saint Valentine, he was jailed. In jail, he became close to the inmates as well as
the jailer’s blind daughter. It is said that Valentine was able to cure the girl’s blindness and bring back her eyesight. Just a few days before dying, Valentine wrote a letter to the daughter of a jailer that read,
“From your Valentine.” On the 14th of February, 270, he was executed.
How 14th February become the day of love
Valentine’s Day was not typically celebrated as a day of love but rather as the death anniversary of Saint Valentine. Many believe that the Christian church Christianized the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia
and renamed it Valentine’s Day. In Lupercalia, it was believed that the god of agriculture bestowed fertility on
women. Therefore, Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “Valentine’s Day” in 496 AD.
Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet of the Middle Ages, associated February 14th with romance in his poem “The Parlement of Fouls.” This started the celebration of February 14 as a romantic day. This slowly
spread throughout Europe, with people adopting February 14 as a day to express their love to their partner. Valentine’s Day romance is also linked to the start of the birds’ mating season in parts of Europe
Evolution of Valentine’s Day
As romance was linked to the celebration of Valentine’s Day, people shared their feelings to express love. In the 18th century, people expressed their feelings through flowers and handwritten greeting cards. People then began to share mass-produced greeting cards. Now, love is celebrated throughout
the week known as “Valentine’s Week.”

An opportunity to celebrate love
Valentine’s Day also gives a single person who is not in a relationship the opportunity to express love.
Couples express their feelings and spend time with each other on Valentine’s Day. “Love” is a powerful emotion that binds people together and gives them a sense of belonging to one another. There
are many reasons why people fall in love. Whatever the reason, love makes a person totally different.
“Love” is a feeling that flutters one’s heart and makes one smile. You will always want to be together
with the person that you love and fear losing them. You may become so enthralled by seeing the person that you love that you make a silly mistake while performing a routine task. But it is okay! It takes time
to speak with them. You may struggle and tremble while speaking for the first time with them. But your love will be the only hope that will give you the courage to tell them that you truly love them.
Finally, we hope that this Valentine’s Day will give you the best gift of all: love.
